Early morning wakes: why your baby is up at 5am and the fixes that work
The five causes of 5am wakes (light, bedtime, the last nap, hunger, and the habit), how to tell which one you have, and a two week plan to move the morning later.
A baby who sleeps through the night and then wakes at 5am ready to start the day is one of the most common and most stubborn sleep problems, partly because it has five different causes that all look the same from the dark side of the nursery. Here is how to tell them apart, and what to do about each.
First, decide what counts as morning
Anything before 6am is night. That is the rule that makes the rest work. If you sometimes get up at 5:15 and sometimes hold until 6, your baby learns that 5:15 is worth a try. Pick the time, usually 6 or 6:30, and treat every wake before it the same way you treat a 2am wake.
The five causes
1. Light
Early morning sleep is the lightest of the night, and the body is primed to wake at dawn. Even a little light through a blind at 5am is enough. Test: can you see your hand in front of your face in the room at 5am? If yes, blackout properly, including the gaps at the edges. This fixes more early wakes than anything else, especially in summer.
2. Bedtime is too late
It sounds backwards, but an overtired baby wakes earlier, not later. Cortisol from a late bedtime makes the light sleep at 4 to 5am harder to get through. If bedtime is after 8pm, or if the evening involves a lot of protest, try moving bedtime 30 minutes earlier for a week. Most parents expect this to make the morning worse. It usually makes it better.
3. The day is out of shape
Too much day sleep leaves too little for the night, and a long first nap that starts at 7:30am is really the end of the night moved into the day. Check total day sleep against the range for the age and push the first nap later in small steps if your baby is treating it as a second sleep.
4. Hunger
Real in younger babies and in older babies who did not eat well the day before. Hunger wakes look like a baby who takes a full feed and goes back to sleep. If that is your pattern, work on daytime intake and consider whether a late feed is still needed, and if you are night weaning, go more gradually.
5. The habit
If your baby has woken at 5am for a few weeks and been rewarded with milk, lights, or a parent's bed, the wake is now scheduled. Habit wakes look like a baby who is cheerful, not hungry, and wide awake. The fix is the boring one: the same night time response every day for one to two weeks.
The two week plan
- Days 1 to 3. Blackout the room properly. Fix bedtime to the earlier end of the range for the age. Agree the morning time (6 or 6:30) with your partner.
- Every wake before morning time. Treat as night. No lights, no milk unless it is a planned feed, no phone glow. Respond the way you respond at 2am, whether that is a brief check-in or waiting. The Ferber method intervals work the same at 5am as at midnight.
- At morning time. Go in, lights on, big cheerful good morning. Make the contrast obvious. Some families use a light that turns green at wake time from about 2 years.
- First nap. Hold it to the normal time, even if the morning was early. A 7:30am nap undoes the work. Shorten the first wake window by 15 minutes at most.
- Log it. Wake time each morning for two weeks. Early wake fixes move the time in 10 to 15 minute steps, which you will not feel but will see on a chart.
What not to do
- Do not go to bed later hoping for a later morning. It backfires.
- Do not give up on day 4. Habit wakes often get worse for a few days before they shift.
- Do not bring the baby into your bed at 5am to buy an hour. It is the most effective way to make 5am permanent.
When 5am is just the morning
Some babies are early risers. If your baby sleeps 11 hours from 6pm to 5am, is happy, naps well and grows well, the fix is a later bedtime in 15 minute steps, not a sleep plan. You can shift a body clock, but only slowly, and only so far.
FAQ
Why does my baby wake up at 5am every day?
The common causes are light in the room, a bedtime that is too late, too much or too early day sleep, hunger, and a learned habit from being rewarded for the early wake. Light and late bedtime are the two to check first.
How do I get my baby to sleep past 5am?
Black out the room, move bedtime earlier, treat every wake before 6am as night with the same response you use at 2am, hold the first nap at its normal time, and keep it up for two weeks. The wake time moves in small steps.
Does an earlier bedtime help with early waking?
Usually yes. An overtired baby wakes earlier, not later. Try moving bedtime 30 minutes earlier for a week before trying anything else.
Should I feed my baby at 5am?
If they are young enough to still need a night feed, or they take a full feed and go back to sleep, yes, in the dark and boring. If they are not hungry and just awake, feeding teaches that 5am is breakfast.
At what time should a baby wake up in the morning?
Most babies naturally wake between 6 and 7am. Anything before 6 is worth treating as night. A baby who sleeps 11 to 12 hours from an early bedtime may simply be done at 5:30, in which case shift bedtime later slowly.
